North Carolina, Coastal Pender
Coastal Hazard Statement
Statement as of 4:50 AM EDT on April 23, 2018
Expires 8:00 PM EDT on April 23, 2018
... High rip current risk remains in effect through this evening...
* location... for the Pender, New Hanover, Horry and Georgetown
County beaches.
* Rip current risk... high.
* Surf height... around 7 feet at the Pender and New Hanover County
beaches, 4 to 5 feet at the Horry and Georgetown County beaches.
* Timing and tides... strong rip currents could occur at any time,
but will be especially prominent several hours either side of low
tide, which will be around 9 am.
* Other hazards... strong and rough surf. Significant beach erosion
possible.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
There is a high risk of rip currents. Life threatening rip currents
are likely in the surf zone.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins, jetties
and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags and
signs.
If you become caught in a rip current, Yell for help. Remain calm,
do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for help. If
you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and
back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly
against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

Wind Advisory
Statement as of 9:08 AM EDT on April 23, 2018
Expires 5:00 AM EDT on April 24, 2018
... Wind Advisory now in effect until 5 am EDT Tuesday...
* winds... becoming east 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.
* Timing... increasing through the afternoon. The strongest winds
are expected this evening and potentially lasting through the
overnight hours.
* Impacts... strong gusty winds could topple some trees causing
isolated power outages, especially as heavy rainfall saturates
the ground. Driving in high profile vehicles could become
difficult, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Wind Advisory means that winds of 35 mph are expected. Winds
this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high
profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
